Golden Ratio Calculator

Calculate the dimensions of a golden ratio division in seconds. Enter the short side, long side, or total length, and the calculator will automatically find the other two values. You can also calculate the difference between the sides and the related areas, with support for metric and imperial units.

How to Use the Golden Ratio Calculator

Enter any known length

Start by entering the short side, long side, or total length. The calculator treats the field you edit as the known value and automatically updates the other two lengths to maintain the golden ratio. You do not need to select a calculation mode or press a calculate button.

Choose a unit from the dropdown to work in millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, inches, feet, or yards. When you change units, the entered lengths are converted and the area units update accordingly, such as m² for square meters or ft² for square feet.

Read the calculated results

The results include the difference between the long and short sides, the small area (short side multiplied by long side), the big area (long side multiplied by itself), and the total area. Length results use the selected length unit, while area results use its squared equivalent.

Golden Ratio Formula

The golden ratio constant

The golden ratio, usually represented by the Greek letter phi (φ), is a mathematical constant approximately equal to 1.6180339887. A line is divided in the golden ratio when the ratio of the whole length to the longer part equals the ratio of the longer part to the shorter part.

φ = (1 + √5) / 2 ≈ 1.6180339887

Calculate the short side, long side, and total length

For a golden ratio division, the long side is φ times the short side. The total length is the sum of the two sides. If the total length is known, divide it by 1 + φ to find the short side, then subtract the short side from the total to find the long side.

Long side = Short side × φ
Total length = Short side + Long side
Short side = Total length / (1 + φ)

Difference and Area Calculations

Difference between the sides

The difference is the long side minus the short side. It tells you how much longer one segment is than the other and is useful when setting out dimensions, planning proportions, or preparing measurements for a design or construction project.

Difference = Long side − Short side

Small area, big area, and total area

The calculator also reports three related area values based on the entered golden-ratio dimensions. The small area is the product of the short and long sides. The big area is a square with the long side as both dimensions. The total area is the long side multiplied by the sum of the long and short sides.

Small area = Short side × Long side
Big area = Long side × Long side
Total area = Long side × (Long side + Short side)

These area values use the same length unit on both dimensions. For example, multiplying meters by meters produces square meters (m²). The total area equals the sum of the small area and big area.

Where Is the Golden Ratio Used?

The golden ratio is often discussed in geometry, architecture, product design, photography, and visual composition. It can be used as a proportional guide when dividing a line or planning the relative dimensions of design elements. It is a mathematical relationship rather than a rule that every successful design must follow.

This calculator focuses on the dimensions of a golden-ratio division and the related area calculations shown above. It is suitable for quick estimates, learning the formula, and checking measurements in design or engineering work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the golden ratio?

The golden ratio is a mathematical constant represented by φ (phi), approximately 1.6180339887. In a golden-ratio division, the ratio of the whole length to the longer segment equals the ratio of the longer segment to the shorter segment.

How do I calculate the golden ratio length?

Enter any one of the three lengths: the short side, the long side, or the total length. The calculator uses φ ≈ 1.6180339887 to calculate the other two values automatically.

Can I calculate the golden ratio from the total length?

Yes. Divide the total length by 1 + φ to find the short side. The long side is the total length minus the short side. The calculator performs both steps automatically.

What units does the golden ratio calculator support?

You can choose millimeters (mm), centimeters (cm), meters (m), kilometers (km), inches (in), feet (ft), or yards (yd). Lengths are displayed in the selected unit, and areas use the corresponding squared unit, such as cm² or in².

How is the difference between the sides calculated?

The difference is calculated by subtracting the short side from the long side: Difference = Long side − Short side.

How are the area results calculated?

Small area = Short side × Long side. Big area = Long side × Long side. Total area = Long side × (Long side + Short side). Area results are expressed in squared units.

Does the calculator convert units?

Yes. When you change the unit dropdown, the length values are converted to the new unit and the area labels update to the corresponding squared unit. For example, changing meters to centimeters converts the lengths and displays areas in cm².
